Arrest in Elderly Couple’s Death
LEAWOOD, Kan. (AP) _ A 79-year-old man has been charged with murder after he allegedly beat an elderly couple with a baseball bat in what authorities described as a love triangle.
Francis Patrick Doyle was charged with killing Lawrence Kubik, who died Saturday. Marguerite Bacher-Kubik was hospitalized in fair condition following the attack last Thursday.
The couple, who were high school sweethearts, married others but were widowed within the last few years. They married in November. Both are 77.
Doyle lived near the couple.
``It’s just kind of a strange deal, one of those weird love-triangle situations,″ prosecutor Paul Morrison said Monday.
Doyle was being held on $2 million bond and could face a minimum of 25 years in prison. He also is charged with attempted murder and burglary. Doyle has denied wrongdoing.
He is accused of sneaking into the couple’s home and beating Kubik with a baseball bat while he slept in his bedroom. Mrs. Bacher-Kubik was able to call 911 from a bathroom telephone before she was attacked.
Doyle and Mrs. Bacher-Kubik were friends, said Doyle’s lawyer, James Anderson. After her first husband died in 1995, it wasn’t unusual for neighbors to see Doyle picking dandelions from her front yard.
``I know that Mr. Doyle would never wish any harm to anyone,″ Anderson said at Doyle’s first court appearance Friday. ``I know that he is sorry that anything ever happened to Mr. Kubik.″
