Office: No prosecution of Mesa officers in May incident
PHOENIX (AP) — The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office has decided against prosecuting two Mesa police officers for use of force against a teenage robbery suspect who was handcuffed.
The office said Friday the force was applied during the May 16 arrest as officers looked for a weapon and that there were be no reasonable likelihood of a conviction for aggravated assault under the circumstances.
Video showed officers cursing the youth and grabbing the collar of his T-shirt tightly around his neck and applying pressure behind the ear on the back of the jaw.
The office said it’s up to the Mesa Police Department to consider whether the amount of force used was appropriate under the department’s standards.
Department spokesman Steve Berry says the officers remain on paid leave while an internal investigation continues.
