Police Arrest 50 People in Alleged Mob Activity
COSENZA, Italy (AP) _ Police carrying out coordinated raids in Rome and eight southern cities arrested 50 people early Wednesday on charges of mob activity, authorities said.
They said police were acting on 150 warrants issued by prosecutor Oreste Nicastro in Cosenza. Fifty-five people named in the warrants already were in jail and police still were seeking the remaining 45 people, authorities said.
Nicastro said all 150 were suspected members of rival clans of the ’Ndrangheta, the Calabrian version of the Mafia. The warrants charge them with criminal association and extortion.
The raids were carried out in Rome, Cosenza, Paolo, Rogliano, Villa San Giovanni, Gioia Tauro, Palmi, Serra de Conti and Tito, police said.
