Delaware bill aimed at healthier beverages in kid’s meals

June 27, 2019

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Delaware’s state Senate has given final approval to a bill mandating that restaurants that serve children’s meals must offer something other than a soft drink as the “default beverage.”

Default beverages under the bill approved Thursday include water, flavored water with no sweeteners, milk, flavored milk, 100% fruit juice or vegetable juice, and juice combinations with no added sweeteners. Customers could still opt for a soft drink or other sugary concoction.

The bill includes an amendment clarifying that it would not lead to additional fines or penalties for restaurants for violation of the beverage mandate.

The bill was approved on a 16-5 vote, with one opponent expressing concern that the food police may soon turn their attention from Happy Meals to Big Macs.
