Cent. Arkansas 14, SW Oklahoma 2 NAIA Division I Playoffs, First Round
WEATHERFORD, Okla. (AP) _ Ken Collums tossed a 47-yard touchdown pass to Scott Robnett as Central Arkansas defeated Southwestern Oklahoma 14-2 Saturday and advanced to the second round of the NAIA Division I playoffs.
Central Arkansas, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA and seeking its second consecutive national title, drove to its first touchdown early in the second quarter in the game played in rain, light snow and high winds.
UCA (9-1-1) ran eight plays to reach the 18-yard line and then scored when Hosea Knowlton, who finished with 107 yards on 30 carries, slipped into the endzone on a draw play with 12:11 to go in the second quarter.
The Bears were forced to try for two points when their kicker slipped on the conversion attempt, but the run failed.
Central Arkansas scored again in the third quarter on a drive that went 74 yards in five plays. The key play was Collums’ 47-yard pass to Robnett with 3:37 left in the quarter.
The Bears added the 2-point conversion on Collums’ pass to Greg Johnson.
Southwestern, which went into the game averaging 158 yards on the ground and 209 in the air, finished with 2 yards rushing and 40 passing.
The Bulldogs finished the year with an 8-2 record and were co-champion of the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference.
Pairings will be announced Sunday for the second round.
