NEW YORK (AP) _ A city bus careened onto the sidewalk and into a building Tuesday evening, injuring 34 people.

One person was in critical condition, 27 others were taken to area hospitals and six declined treatment, authorities said.

After jumping a curb, the bus crashed into a Solomon Smith Barney building, then halted on 34th Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues.

A police department employee was the lone pedestrian injured; the others were on the bus.

``This may be a true miracle on 34th Street, that you could have a city bus go up on the sidewalk at 7 o'clock on a warm summer night and have only one person get hit,'' said Richard Sheirer, the city's director of emergency management.
