Lawyers Fight Sterilization of Mentally Impaired Woman
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ A mentally impaired woman who has gotten pregnant three times in less than than two years won judicial permission to be sterilized.
The woman, whose name was not made public, testified that she wants the sterilization because she ″can’t find the right man.″
″There are a lot of jerks out there,″ the woman said Thursday. She has an IQ of about 70, making her developmentally disabled.
The woman’s parents want their daughter sterilized. They had to go to court because the 22-year-old is not considered legally competent.
Surrogate Court Judge Joseph Mattina said Friday that he will order the sterilization if medical and psychological tests find it will not harm her.
But the woman’s court-appointed lawyers said they will appeal. Court- ordered sterilization has only been permitted in cases where pregnancy might endanger a woman’s life or health, they said.
The woman is due to give birth to her second child this month. She has a 9- month-old. A miscarriage ended another pregnancy last year.
