Run for the Heroes returns for a 10th year in Florence
FLORENCE, S.C. – The 10th annual Run for the Heroes races will be held on Memorial Day to honor the servicemen and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
On Monday, May 27, a 5K race, a 10K race and a one-mile Fun Walk will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church at 2536 Hoffmeyer Road. All races will begin at 8 a.m. following a military tribute at 7:30 a.m.
Last year the race was moved to the Saturday before Memorial Day because the Florence One Schools district used Memorial Day as a school makeup day. The races return to their traditional Memorial Day event this year.
Proceeds from the race will benefit the American Red Cross and St. Anthony Catholic School, said Tracy Hamner, principal of St. Anthony’s Catholic School. The donation to the American Red Cross helps the organization further its support to the military.
A military tribute will kick off the race-day events, which includes a performance by the school band of taps and a flag presentation.
All registered participants will receive a “Red, White and Blue” pancake breakfast immediately following the race. Non-race participants are welcome to join them for breakfast for a nominal donation.
Hamner said the pancake breakfast is a fun way to enjoy pancakes with blueberries and strawberries.
Medals will be given to the overall male and female winners of the 5K and 10K, the top three male and female racers in the 13 age groups and the top finishers in the master’s category, which includes runners 40 and older.
To register for the race online, go to itsyourrace.com/event.aspx?id=9276. The 5K race cost is $30, the 10K race is $40 and the one-mile Fun Walk is $15 ($30 for a family). There are military discounts for each race.
Participants can register onsite the day of the race between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.
There also will be an early packet pickup from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Participants also can register for the race at that time.
Charlotte Tilton is the race chair.
