Black, Suarez Stage Upsets at Madrid

MADRID, Spain (AP) _ Cara Black upset third-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn in straight sets Tuesday in the first round of the Madrid Open clay-court women’s tournament.

Black’s 6-3, 6-3 victory advanced her to the next round against Emilie Loit.

In other upsets, Paola Suarez defeated No. 4 seed Patty Schnyder 6-4, 6-4, and Magui Serna downed No. 6 seed Iva Majoli 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Elsewhere, fifth-seeded Anna Smashnova defeated Samantha Reeves 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Marissa Irvin advanced to the second round when Virgina Ruano withdrew because of injury. Other first-round winners were Dinara Safina, Nicole Pratt and Clarisa Fernandez.

Top-seeded Monica Seles and No. 2 seed Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario had byes to the second round.
