All-girls school to close despite fundraising efforts

July 13, 2018

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Maine Girls’ Academy says it’s closing for good, despite efforts from alumnae and students to help the school pay off its $250,000 debt.

The Portland Press Herald reports school trustee chair Heidi Osborn said in a letter Wednesday that the school is “ceasing operations, releasing its staff and closing its doors.”

Osborn says the school is no longer accepting donations, and no solicitations are allowed.

The school announced last week that it was closing July 15 due to declining enrollment and a lease deadline on the building.

Alumnae and students managed to raise more than $18,000 over the weekend to try and save the school, but Osborn says the future of the school has “no likelihood of a different outcome.”
