Aiken Standard’s Career Expo presents opportunities to Aiken adults seeking jobs

October 10, 2018

The Aiken Standard’s Career Expo was held at Newberry Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

Attendees were able to speak to representatives from a variety of companies based in Aiken at the event, discuss employment opportunities, network and fill out job applications.

“It’s actually a great way to get other vendors out, and also to show that Aiken is hiring,” said Isaac Kelly of Aiken Staffing.

Aiken Staffing sponsored the Career Expo. Kelly said they have been presenting sponsors of the event for the past two years.

“We love to be able to see our community and to let them know that there are other jobs that are available, not just with our agency, but with other companies,” said Aiken Staffing Manager Melissa Walker. “There are lots of opportunities for people seeking jobs.”

The Career Expo is designed to help people of all ages and stages of employment find jobs in Aiken, whether they are looking for advancement in their field or a total job change.

“We want to get our name out there, but also to help individuals in this area try to find jobs,” said Amanda Cameron, senior technical recruiter of Edgewater Technical Associates. “I mean, it’s win-win all the way around.”

Some job seekers were still in high school, while others were looking for a way to keep busy during retirement. Part-time, seasonal and full-time opportunities were presented by vendors.

“I’m seeking employment here,” said Levandrick Bacote, who spoke with vendors at the event. “If I catch anybody that sees the potential in me, then I’ll take it.”

Bacote said he felt confident while speaking with potential employers at the expo, which was the reaction organizers were hoping for.

“Some people are intimidated, and I have to say we have some people who are employers and some people who are job seekers who really appreciated this environment,” said Aiken Standard Marketing and Special Events Coordinator Lisa Glass. “The companies were approachable in this kind of a setting.”

Glass said around 250 people attended the Aiken Standard’s Career Expo held earlier this year in February.

“We had people that were hired on the spot and went to work the next day,” Glass said.
