LINARES, Spain (AP) _ Vasili Ivanchuk of the Soviet Union held the lead in the Seventh City of Linares chess tournament Thursday after the 10th round of play.
Ivanchuk drew with former world champion Anatoli Karpov, also of the Soviet Union.
Alexander Beliavsky of the Soviet Union defeated fellow Soviet Artur Yusupov and Valeri Gulkov of the United States drew with Soviet Andrei Sokolov.
Two matches were adjourned: Jan Timman of Netherlands against Johan Hjartarson of Iceland, and Nigel Short of Britain against Yugoslavia’s Ljbomir Ljubojevic.
Lajos Portisch of Hungary did not play Thursday.
Ivanchuk led the standings with 6 points, followed by Karpov with 5.5; Ljubojevic with 4.5; Yusupov with 4; Portisch, Short and Gulkov with 3.5 each; Timman, Hjartarson and Beliavsky with 3 each; and Sokolov with 2.5.
