High school playoffs open with 17 SETX teams

November 15, 2018

Seven Southeast Texas high schools begin their quest for a state championship in football on Thursday. Ten more teams begin the playoffs on Friday.

One of the first teams taking the field is Lumberton High School, which will make its fourth playoff appearance in the school’s 54-year history. It faces Houston’s Wheatley in Baytown at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“It means so much to this place,” Lumberton coach Chris Babin said. “It’s fun to watch your boys compete but it was many decades here in Lumberton where it wasn’t.”

Babin’s team brings the best defense in district 11-4A-I.

Last year in Southeast Texas, Newton won the state championship in Class 3A, Division II. West Orange-Stark made it to the Class 4A, Division II championship game but lost.

Newton is on a journey to repeat, while schools such as Jasper and West Brook want to carve their names in the record books.
