AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) _ Volkswagen is voluntarily recalling its 1999 Jetta and Golf four-door models due to sound-absorbing material in the doors that might have been improperly installed and could catch fire.

The recall involves about 11,585 Jettas and Golfs in the United States and 1,385 Jettas sold in Canada, VW said.

The seat belt tension system, designed to provide extra protection in severe collisions, creates heat and could potentially ignite the material if it has been damaged by improper installation, VW said.

No accidents or injuries have resulted from the problem, and only one reported incident in a controlled test environment, the automaker said.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail. Dealers will remove the material, which is designed to reduce sound at higher speeds, from the door pillars. All work will be completed at no cost to the customer.
