Greece: 1 immigrant dies in Aegean Sea, 12 sought
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek authorities say one man has died trying to enter the country illegally in a small boat crammed with immigrants, while separately rescuers are seeking another 12 migrants reported missing at sea.
Greece is the European Union’s main gateway for illegal immigration.
A coastguard statement says the victim was found unconscious in waters off the eastern Aegean Sea islet of Oinousses early Thursday, and died shortly later. The other 45 immigrants, who had crossed over from nearby Turkey, were in good health. They identified themselves as Syrian, Camerounian and Afghan nationals.
The coastguard also said a search and rescue operation is under way off the island of Kos, south of Oinousses, where a Syrian man reported that he survived the sinking of a small boat with another 12 immigrants.
