Chinese Champ Loses Olympic Spot

July 13, 2000

BEIJING (AP) _ Wu Yanyan, the world champion in the women’s 200-meter individual medley, has been dropped from China’s Olympic team after failing a drug test.

A four-year ban is expected to be announced in a few days for Wu, said Zhao Jian, an official of the Chinese Olympic Committee’s anti-doping commission.

Wu, 22, tested positive in May for a banned stimulant, and a second test in June confirmed the result after she was suspended, Zhao said. A ban would keep Wu out of the Sydney Olympics in September.

The disclosure is especially embarrassing to China amid its anti-doping crackdown meant to restore a sports reputation badly damaged by a series of drug scandals.
