WASHINGTON (AP) _ The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has lowered the number of deaths linked to recalled Firestone tires from 103 to 101 after two University of Maryland students discovered an error.

The students were reviewing accident reports Wednesday and found two of the 103 fatalities listed by NHTSA actually were pets killed in a crash in which two people were injured.

The NHTSA documents also incorrectly listed the accident _ a blowout that led to a rollover _ as happening in Maryland. It actually occurred in Louisiana.

A NHTSA spokesman blamed the mistake on ``a clerical error.''
