Israelis Round Up Palestinians In Tyre Refugee Camp

April 14, 1985

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) _ Israeli troops circled the Palestinian refugee camp of El-Bass in the southern port city of Tyre on Sunday and rounded up males between the ages of 15 and 45, Tyre residents said.

Heavy fighting persisted overnight in the port city of Sidon, and police said four people were killed and 34 wounded within 12 hours.

Tyre residents, reached by telephone, said Israeli armored personnel carriers and jeeps laid siege to the camp on the eastern edge of the city and were interrogating men and searching houses.

Israelis in jeeps told the refugees through loudspeakers, ″the inhabitants of the bass camp, males between the ages of 15 and 45, gather at the city stadium,″ near the Mediterranean coast opposite the camp, said the residents, who requested anonymity.

They said the siege followed two separate rocket attacks on the Israeli intelligence headquarters adjoining the camp during the night and early in the morning. There was no word on casualties or damage.

Israeli military sources in Tel Aviv said there was routine activity in the camp area, but that they had no details.

Residents told reporters the overnight shelling was ″the worst and most violent″ since the fighting began March 29.

Christian Lebanese Forces militiamen were fighting Palestinians and Moslem Lebanese, and residents said rockets, mortars and machine guns were used.
