Bernard “Bud” Eugene Plantz, 81, of Vero Beach, Florida, formerly of Columbus and Lincoln, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, at Indian River Hospital in Vero Beach.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus, with The Rev. Edward Yang officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard.

Bernard was born March 9, 1937, in Columbus, to Paul and Irene (Soulliere) Zobel. Bud graduated from Kramer High School in 1956, and immediately entered the U.S. Navy. He was in the Navy until he was honorably discharged in 1960. Once he arrived back home in Columbus, he went to work building bridges in Lancaster County on the U.S. 80 project, causing him to move to Lincoln. Bud then went on to build missile silos throughout Nebraska and returning to Columbus in 1962, where Bud met the love of his life, Karen Robertson. They were united in marriage on July 8, 1963, in Lincoln.

Bud and Karen ended up in Lincoln where Bud was a firefighter for 21 years with the city of Lincoln. They went on to raise two children, LaShelle and Steve. Bud retired with his wife to Florida, where he was able to immerse himself in golf. He had said that if Shelle and her family had been there, it would have been a perfect retirement.

Bud is survived by daughter, LaShalle Plantz of Lincoln; son, Steve Plantz of Vero Beach, Florida; grandson, Zachary (Aubrey) Thompson of Lincoln; great-grandson, Warren Thompson; grandson, Joshua (Kathryn) Thompson of Lincoln; great-granddaughter, Freya Thompson; granddaughter, Keegan Thompson of Lincoln; great-grandsons, Landon and Brecken Thompson; brother, Paul Zobel of Fort Pierce, Florida; sister, Penny (Kevin) Burch of South Bend; Jeff Thompson of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Gary (Ann) Robertson of Columbus; numerous nieces and nephews.

Bud was preceded in death by parents, Paul and Irene Zobel; wife, Karen Plantz; brother, Robert (Rosie) Plantz; sister, Norma Tupper; niece, Barbara Plantz; parents-in-law, Herchel and Winona (Hullihen) Robertson; brothers-in-law, Richard, Jack, and Hugh “Bud” Robertson; sisters-in-law, Betty and Shirley Robertson; stepmother-in-law, Pearle (Branz) Robertson.
