Chicken, beer and pickleball bar coming to UTSA area

September 21, 2018

Chicken N Pickle, a Missouri restaurant and sports bar specializing in rotisserie chicken and a court game called pickleball, is opening it’s first location in San Antonio in fall 2019.

The restaurant will occupy a 4-acre site on UTSA Boulevard on the city’s Northwest Side, said Kellen Mumm, Chicken N Pickle’s vice president of business development.

It takes a site that big to realize what Mumm said are plans for a restaurant that will hold up to 500 people and four bars, plus six indoor courts and four outdoor courts for Chicken N Pickle’s signature draw: pickleball.

Pickleball combines elements of badminton, tennis and ping-pong, played by four people with a plastic wiffle ball and oversize paddles on courts about 20 feet shorter than a tennis court with a waist-high net in the middle.

Mumm compared pickleball to “playing ping-pong, but you’re standing on the table.” But it goes deeper than that. “Pickleball’s the soul of the restaurant,” Mumm said. “We tie it all together for a healthy lifestyle. Play hard, eat well.”

The San Antonio menu will follow the original North Kansas City restaurant’s menu, Mumm said, with wood-fired rotisserie chicken offered in four spice-rub varieties, burgers with grass-fed beef, brunch service, chicken wings, salads and sandwiches with fried chicken, pulled pork and more.

The San Antonio Chicken N Pickle will feature four bars, with one on the rooftop, each offering something different, from local craft beers to wine and cocktails, Mumm said.

The restaurant’s also adding a location in Wichita, Kansas, by the end of this year, Mumm said. For the first expansion beyond the Midwest, he said Chicken N Pickle also considered Austin, Dallas and Houston.

Future expansions might include those cities, he said, but ultimately, “The stars aligned on San Antonio.”
