3rd man charged in alleged plot to overthrow Gambian leader

January 30, 2015

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A third man has been charged in connection with last month’s failed attempt to overthrow the government in the West African nation of Gambia.

Forty-one-year-old Alagie Barrow is charged in federal court in Minnesota with breaking a law that makes it illegal to take military action against a country with whom the U.S. is “at peace.” He also faces a weapons charge.

Barrow is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Gambia. Prosecutors say he went to Gambia in December to overthrow the government. They say he was responsible for bringing other group members to safe houses, and that he conducted reconnaissance of the State House before the Dec. 30 attack.

Barrow’s attorney, Joe Friedberg, met his client Friday and had no immediate comment on the charges.
