LOS ANGELES (AP) _ The coach of a nationally prominent high school basketball team has been arrested on suspicion of having sex with a minor.
Russell Otis of Dominguez High was arrested Thursday by detectives with the Family Crime Bureau, said Deputy Bruce Thomas of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Thomas said the 38-year-old coach has not been charged. Authorities said they are investigating him for suspicion of sexual battery, sodomy and oral copulation with a person under 18.
Otis refused to comment Thursday night when reached by the Long Beach Press-Telegram newspaper. A call to the school by The Associated Press on Friday was not immediately returned.
His original bail of $50,000 was increased to $100,000, Thomas said. Otis posted bail and was released Thursday night. An arraignment date has not been set.
Otis coached the Dominguez boys team to a 35-2 record last year and the top ranking in several national polls. He has led Dominguez to six consecutive regional titles and four of the last five Division II state championships.
Otis, who is married and has a teen-age son, attended Dominguez High. He returned to the Compton school as a teacher and coach after graduating in 1986 from Southern Utah and took over the varsity program at 23.
