Soccer season arrives Friday in 3 things to watch in high school sports
The last time the Quaker Valley boys soccer team traveled across the state, the Quakers returned home with a PIAA championship trophy.
Now nine months later, they’re headed east once again.
Soccer season starts today with a number of kickoff events including the East-West Classic in Fleetwood, where Quaker Valley opens its season as defending state Class 2A champions. QV faces Wilson at 5 p.m.
Also in the classic, Mt. Lebanon faces host Fleetwood at 6:30 p.m.
Fleetwood is located just outside of Reading.
Closer to home, WPIAL Class 4A runner-up Peters Township is hosting an opening day event. The Indians face Sewickley Academy at 3:30 p.m.
South Hills Kickoff Classic
The largest field in the area for a girls soccer event is the South Hills Kickoff Classic at Century Field in South Park. Friday’s schedule has Butler facing Mt. Lebanon at 4 p.m., Erie McDowell vs. Peters Township at 6 p.m., and Mercyhurst Prep vs. South Park at 8 p.m.
Football starts conference schedule
With Week Zero in the rearview mirror, WPIAL football season intensifies Friday with Week 1. A large majority of WPIAL teams will find themselves facing conference opponents right away.
Among the best Week 1 matchups, North Allegheny visits Norwin, and Central Catholic hosts Seneca Valley at the Wolvarena. All four are potential playoff teams in Class 6A.
Penn-Trafford visits Gateway in a rematch of last season’s WPIAL Class 5A championship. Either Derry or Freeport will establish itself as an early contender in the Class 3A Big East Conference.
In Class 4A, Beaver Area visits South Fayette in a matchup of ranked Northwest Eight teams.
