Wofford 17, Western Carolina 7

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) _ Wofford rolled up 325 yards on the ground and played keep-away from Western Carolina to take a 17-7 win Saturday in Southern Conference action.

Wofford took a 3-0 halftime lead, then controlled the ball for all but 7:38 of the second half.

The win broke a string of eight straight losses by Wofford to Western Carolina (2-4).

Wofford (2-3) jumped out to a 10-0 lead midway through the third quarter when quarterback Brad Smothers capped an 18-play, 79-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run.

The Terriers padded their lead to 17-0 after Tony Young intercepted a Josh Brooks’ pass and returned it to the Western Carolina 29. Five plays later, Smothers ran it in from the 1-yard line.

Western Carolina’s lone score came on a Shawn Snyder 23-yard pass to Kenya Crooks with 2:55 to play in the game.

Fullback Miles Lane led Wofford with 98 yards on 21 carries. Tailback Tracy Biggs ran for 76 yards on 10 carries.

Western Carolina finished with 334 yards in total offense. Brooks completed 12 of 23 passes for 108 yards, but was intercepted twice.

Wofford threw only one pass in the game. It was incomplete.
