PFLAG offering screening of ‘Becoming More Visible’
MICHIGAN CITY — Are you male or female?
For the four fearless young transgender adults featured in “Becoming More Visible” this is not a simple question. These four defy societal norms to be their true selves and become more visible. No transition is easy, but for some it is easier than for others.
Sean is a trans male comedian from a small affluent town in upstate New York. Katherine is a Bangladeshi trans girl from a family steeped in their cultural traditions. Olivia had to leave her family in Atlanta and enter the shelter system in order to be the woman she knows she is. The unforgettable Morgin is a fully transitioned woman pursuing her musical ambitions and attempting to make her way in the world.
“Becoming More Visible” shines a humanizing light on their different stories, both their struggles and their triumphs, and showcases the importance of having a steady support system. The film also briefly goes over the physical process some of them decide to take in transitioning. It seeks to help ignite the awareness and understanding needed to put an end to the discrimination of transgender young adults worldwide — to encourage society to see these young people for who they are today, not how they were born or choose to identify.
Join PFLAG (Parents, Family, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Michigan City and La Porte County Chapter for a special viewing of “Becoming More Visible” in place of our usual advocacy, education and support meeting.
On March 28, we will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m., skip usual introductions, watch the film, hold a discussion, then end at approximately 8:30 p.m. Please know that anything and everything talked about at our meetings remains in our meetings, so we create a confidential space for you to open up or remain silent.
Our meetings — for those 18 years of age and over — are usually held the fourth Thursday of the month except for November (due to Thanksgiving) and December (due to Christmas) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and will usually include advocacy, education, and support. We meet at the Artspace Uptown Artist Lofts, 7th floor Community Room, 717 Franklin St., Michigan City. We welcome everybody who are allies including everyone in our LGBTQA+ community!
