Southtown’s Villa Rica restaurant to close until spring
Don’t worry, San Antonio. There’s still a couple weeks to swim with the fishes San Antonio restaurateur Johnny Hernandez is serving at his coastal Mexican restaurant Villa Rica.
Hernandez has announced plans to close the restaurant on Jan. 6 for a redesign of the dining room and menu overhaul. The facelift should be complete by early March.
Among the many changes slated, Hernandez promises an expanded selection of dishes inspired by the cuisine of Veracruz, Baja, Yucatan and the Pacific and the addition of lunch hours.
Villa Rica opened in February at at 403 Blue Star in the The Flats at Big Tex development. The restaurant is a partnership between Hernandez and the Guzmán family of Veracruz, who own several Villa Rica locations in Mexico.
In an April review, Express-News dining critic Mike Sutter awarded the restaurant a star and a half. Villa Rica’s sweet corn torte was included in the Express-News’s list of the 25 best San Antonio restaurant dishes of 2018.
