Denver police officer justified in shooting before standoff
DENVER (AP) — The Denver district attorney has decided a police officer was justified in shooting a man who fled and barricaded himself inside a house because the man shot at the officer first.
The Denver Post reported Wednesday that 23-year-old Mauricio Venzor-Gonzalez was shot three times in an exchange of gunfire with a Denver police officer in November. Venzor-Gonzalez was able to escape the pursuing officer, seeking refugee inside an Aurora house.
Officers found Venzor-Gonzalez at the house two days after the gunfire exchange, leading to an hourslong standoff.
Venzor-Gonzalez was taken into custody with gunshot wounds to his left arm, right thigh and right foot.
District Attorney Beth McCann says the officer was forced to make a split-second decision.
