Cullman County community votes in favor of incorporation

February 14, 2018

BERLIN, Ala. (AP) — Residents of a Cullman County community have voted to form north Alabama’s newest city.

The Cullman Times reports that residents of Berlin voted 45-23 in favor of incorporation. Only 68 of 300 residents eligible to vote cast their ballots at the Berlin Community Center on Tuesday.

Berlin will be 12th municipality in Cullman County.

Resident Patrick Bates pushed for incorporation over the past two years. He researched tax policy, circulated a petition and covered the cost of the election, which exceeded $5,000.

Bates says he was overwhelmed seeing all his effort come together as the votes were counted.

Next, the county will perform a census of the new town and enter an order of incorporation. Officials will schedule an election to pick a mayor and town council.
