Coast Guard rescues 4 fishermen when boat sinks off Maine
ROCKLAND, Maine (AP) — The Coast Guard says it has rescued four fishermen after their 76-foot boat sank off the Maine Coast.
Petty Officer Zachary Madden said the crew of the Aaron and Melissa II reported listing in strong winds before 139-ton boat went down Wednesday morning 50 miles off Rockland, Maine.
Madden said the four were hoisted into a Coast Guard helicopter and taken to the Brunswick Executive Airport. From there, he said they were transported to a hospital to be checked out.
Madden said the crew did everything right: The four had survival suits, a covered life boat, and an emergency radio beacon. He said the beacon allowed an aircraft to quickly find them.
He said the wind was gusting to nearly 60 mph, and seas were 10 to 12 feet.
