BASEL, Switzerland (AP) _ Roger Federer, playing before his home fans, ousted American Andy Roddick from the Swiss Indoors in a match Friday between two of the rising stars of tennis.
The 20-year-old Federer beat Roddick 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) to advance to the semifinals of the $1 million event. Roddick, 19, led 5-3 in the final-set tiebreak, but faltered, and an unforced error gave Federer the match before an ecstatic crowd of 9,000.
Federer’s Davis Cup partner, Georg Bastl, didn’t fare as well, losing to Frenchman Julien Boutter 2-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (7). Boutter will meet Federer in Saturday’s semifinal.
Carlos Moya of Spain defeated Nikolai Davidenko of Russia 7-6 (4) 7-6 (3), and will face the winner the match between Tim Henman of Britain and Michel Kratochvil of Switzerland.
