PRISON DOOR LOCK PROBLEM
PHOENIX _ The Arizona Department of Corrections has begun transferring inmates from a Phoenix-area state prison with cell door lock problems that a union representing guards says led to an inmate’s death and the severe beating of two guards. Department spokesman Andrew Wilder said Monday night that the transfers of inmates from the Lewis prison in Buckeye to other state-run prisons in Arizona will reduce the number of inmates in cells now secured with padlocks. _ LAWMAKER-ETHICS COMPLAINT: The chairman of the Arizona House ethics committee has dismissed a complaint saying a lawmaker violated the state constitution by working as an unpaid reserve deputy marshal for the city of Tombstone.
_ RETIRING POLICE CHIEF: Prescott Valley’s police chief will retire this summer. Police Chief Bryan Jarrell announced Monday that July 1 will be his last day with the department.
_ FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT: Authorities say a motorcyclist who was not wearing a helmet has died on an Arizona roadway after he hit a guardrail on a road near Sedona and was thrown off his bike and down an embankment.
_ PEORIA MURDER-SUICIDE: Authorities say a married couple in Peoria is dead after an apparent murder-suicide.
_ MEXICO-US TOMATOES: Mexico’s Economy Department says U.S. consumers could pay 38% to 70% more for tomatoes after the U.S. Commerce Department announced it would re-impose anti-dumping duties on Mexican imports.
