FOREST PARK, Ga. (AP) _ A man broke into an apartment and fatally shot a 2-year-old boy Friday after demanding money from the child's father, authorities said.

The gunman fled after the shooting Thursday, leaving the boy in a pool of blood. He died early Friday in a hospital and authorities continued their search for the killer.

The man entered the apartment and grabbed the child while demanding $1,000 in tax refund money from the boy's father, authorities said. The assailant ``started counting down 5, 4, 3 with the gun pointed at the child's head,'' Clayton County police Capt. Jeff Turner said.

But before he could finish the countdown, the boy's aunt walked in the room. The man lunged for the aunt, and the father ran for the back door, police said. The father turned around after hearing two shots and saw his son lying on the floor bleeding, Turner said.

The boy's father said he did not know the assailant but had seen him around the apartment complex.
