COLORADO WILDFIRES

DURANGO, Colo. — A growing wildfire burning in southwestern Colorado forced more people from their homes Sunday as crews tried to slow the blaze being fed by continued hot, dry and windy conditions. Authorities ordered the residents of 675 homes to evacuate after the fire burning north of Durango nearly doubled in size overnight to 26 square miles (67 square kilometers).

The U.S. Army is scouting large cities to find a home for a new command headquarters so it will be close to academia and industry, a first for the service. The Army typically likes to put its facilities away from population centers because there is space to train in rural areas and operations won’t disrupt the public. By Jennifer McDermott.

HORSE ROUNDUP-COLORADO— Federal land managers are hoping to conduct roundups to remove hundreds of wild horses in western Colorado this year. The Daily Sentinel reports that the Bureau of Land Management is asking for public comment on a plan to use water and bait to corral wild horses in the Little Book Cliffs Herd Management Area near Grand Junction and remove 60.

PRISONER-TAX FRAUD— A Colorado man who masterminded a scheme that fraudulently sought nearly $2.2 million in federal tax refunds has been sentenced to 12 years in prison. Jaquon Mucsarney of Aurora earlier pleaded guilty to fraud and aggravated identity theft. He was sentenced Monday in Denver.
