Man gets probation for stealing $400k in government benefits
BOSTON (AP) — A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to probation for stealing more than $400,000 in Social Security and federal pension benefits.
U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz says 64-year-old Richard Alan Hersey, of Winthrop, was sentenced Tuesday to five years of probation and was ordered to pay restitution. Hersey pleaded guilty in November 2015.
Prosecutors say Hersey failed to notify the Social Security Administration and the Civil Service Retirement System when his mother died in 1991. Her benefits continued to be deposited into a bank account she and Hersey jointly held. Hersey routinely withdrew the funds from the account and spent them on personal items, including a cruise to the Bahamas.
Hersey falsely stated that he thought his mother was still alive when he was confronted by investigators in 2015.
