COCOA, Fla. (AP) _ Jack Armstrong, who went from being the starting pitcher in the 1990 All- Star game to being a pick in the expansion draft, tossed four scoreless innings as his Florida Marlins lost to an Atlanta Braves split squad 1-0 Sunday.

″I’ve been told plenty of times in the past to back off on a few pitches, but I’ve always wanted to throw everything harder and harder and harder,″ said Armstrong, who threw mostly changeups. ″This spring I’m concentrating on throwing my off-speed pitches and its been working.″

Armstrong, who allowed two hits, struck out three and walked one, has given up only one earned run in 11 innings this spring.

Greg McMichael, who struck out five in three scoreless innings, was the winner, while Cris Carpenter took the loss.

With the Cincinnati Reds in 1990, Armstrong reached the All-Atar break with an 11-3 record and a 2.28 ERA. He developed arm trouble and had a 1-6 mark and a 5.96 ERA in the second half of the season.

″I would just throw hard for five or six innings in Cincinnati,″ Armstrong said. ″We had an outstanding bullpen and I didn’t have too many complete games past the Triple A level.″

Armstrong never regained his early 1990 form and he was dealt to the Cleveland Indians after the 1991 season.

In 1992 in Cleveland, he went 6-15 with a 4.64 ERA. He was selected by the Marlins in the second round of the expansion draft.

The Braves scored their run without a hit. McMichael reached second on a Gary Scott error, was sacrificed to third by Deion Sanders and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wally Backman.

--- Notes:. Sanders’ speed enabled him to beat out an infield hit in the eighth inning, but, after advancing to second on a wild pitch, he was thrown out trying to steal third by Charles Johnson, a member of last year’s United States Olympic team and Florida’s first pick in the 1992 draft. Johnson also threw out Keith Mitchell trying to steal second in the seventh. ... The Marlins’ Bryan Harvey made his second appearance of the spring and for the second time pitched one inning, setting down the side in order.
