Benfica beats Braga to increase overnight lead in Portugal
LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Jonas and Eliseu Pereira scored to help Benfica beat 10-man Braga 2-0 at home Saturday and increase its overnight lead in the Portuguese league.
Jonas scored Benfica’s first goal in the 21st minute with a strike from outside the area.
Braga’s Tiago Gomes was sent off with his second booking in the 59th for a late tackle of Eduardo Silva, and Pereira scored in the 76th after he received a pass from Andreas Samaris.
The defending champions opened a seven-point gap over second-place FC Porto before it hosts Arouca on Sunday.
Braga, which had beaten Benfica twice this season in the league and the cup, was left in fourth place.
Setubal also won 1-0 at Guimaraes, while Estoril drew 2-2 at Belenenses.
