Investigation follows shootings involving detained juvenile
MCDONOUGH, Ga. (AP) — State officials are investigating after shootings involving a 15-year-old detainee and officers transporting him.
Juvenile Justice Commissioner Avery Niles says the boy was being returned to a youth detention center in Henry County Wednesday from a group home in Macon after he failed a testing period to prepare him for release.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation tells local news outlets a female officer was driving and a male officer was in the back seat with the teen.
Officials say the handcuffed teen lunged for the steering wheel and then grabbed the woman’s gun, shooting her.
The male officer then shot the teen.
The car ran off the road during the struggle.
The female officer was treated and released from a hospital. The teen was hospitalized and his condition is unknown.
