Bear that attacked person in Aspen is captured, killed

August 24, 2019

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — State wildlife officers say they trapped and killed a bear that attacked an Aspen restaurant manager.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife said Friday the bear was found in the vicinity of the attack. Measurements of its teeth made after it was killed matched bite marks on the restaurant manager.

The bear weighed 400 pounds (182 kilograms). Officials say its size and presence in Aspen made it a threat to humans.

Officials say the bear had been scavenging for food in a trash bin and the restaurant manager tried to it away when it attacked Sunday. Officials questioned why the bin was open.

It was the third bear attack in three months in Aspen. It primped wildlife officials to plead with people to keep garbage and other edibles secure from the animals.
