JSW USA BRINGS MINGO JUNCTION BACK TO LIFE

Ohio facility restarts electric arc furnace for the first time since 2009

JSW USA is pleased to announce that it has restarted its facility in Mingo Junction, Ohio. After being idle for 3,545 days it is now a melt and manufacture mill. The reopening of the mill is expected to create 1,000 jobs.

Mingo Junction is now the largest Connsteel Tenova EAF in North America. The first slab was cast on December 14, 2018. Now that the facility will be melting its own steel, JSW USA will be more cost effective and ensuring the highest quality for customers in 2019.

“Today, we are making history,” said John Hritz, President and CEO of JSW USA. “I would like to congratulate the entire Ohio team on this great success. Together, we will be making hundreds of new jobs in Mingo Junction. With the holiday season upon us, we could not be more thrilled to bring this good news to the Mingo Junction community.”

Looking forward, JSW USA is already in the design process to install another EAF in Ohio. And at the Baytown, Texas mill, equipment is coming from all over the world to make JSW USA 100% melt and manufacture in approximately 18 to 24 months. As JSW USA works toward its goal of being completely melt and manufacture, the company has filed for a limited duration exclusion on the import of 10-inch and 12-inch slabs and API grades of steel that are not available in the United States. However, three US mills have filed objections to JSW USA’s requests for exclusion. The U.S. Department of Commerce has not yet made a decision on JSW’s exclusion request. Once the company completes both of the EAFs in Ohio and a third in Texas, JSW USA will become a 3-million- ton flat rolled mill, a 1-million-ton plate mill and a 500,000-ton pipe mill.

Added CEO John Hritz, “When all is said and done, JSW USA will be producing the highest quality, lowest cost steel products in the country, whether they’re made in Texas or here in Ohio. This is all about installing the best technology in the world here in the US and creating secure jobs for decades to come in our industry.”

Photos of the new EAF facility and interviews are available by request.
