Suicide Bombings in Tel Aviv Wound 30
JERUSALEM (AP) _ Two suicide bombers blew themselves up in downtown Tel Aviv on Sunday, killing several bystanders and wounding at least 30, police and a local fire chief said. Seven of those hurt were in critical condition.
Police said the attack was a double suicide bombing, similar to an attack in the same area in August. It was the first bombing in an Israeli city since Nov. 21, when a suicide bomber blew up a bus in Jerusalem, killing himself and 11 passengers.
Most of the casualties were in a restaurant called ``McChina,″ TV reports said, showing pictures of rescue workers loading casualties into ambulances.
Local fire chief Moshe Ohana said several people were killed in the attack.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the location, Tel Aviv’s older quarter where narrow streets are routinely jammed by cars.
Bystanders were helping to remove the wounded from the scene with improvised means, using doors torn from their hinges as makeshift stretchers.
Police closed off the area.
