BOCA RATON, FL / ACCESSWIRE / August 30, 2018 / “No man is an island,″ credited to John Donne from his book written in 1624 certainly applies to the legal profession. This is exemplified by the attempt of some defendant’s efforts to defend themselves in a legal matter to reduce their legal costs. The usual result of trying to go it alone is a longer jail term and/or higher penalties and fines.
Any defendant will certainly need the services of an attorney and the attorney will certainly need the support of a legal team to put forward the best defense possible. No one works alone and National Legal Staffing Support (NLSS) is here to provide that needed support to defense attorneys and attorneys involved with consumer protection cases.
Law offices are often bursting at the seams with work and are finding it increasingly difficult to handle their caseloads while keeping the support staff at an affordable level. This is not a new issue as the increase in the need for legal services has ballooned over the past 60 years.
The Advent of the Paralegal
The advent of the paralegal began in 1960 when Congress and the American Bar Association (ABA) and leading legal firms of the day strived to make the legal systems more available to the common person. Realizing that becoming an ABA-accredited lawyer required four years of undergraduate work and three years of law school, the decision to let people who might be educated in other fields handle some legal duties was made.
Most of the new paralegals were legal secretaries with some experience and largely female. The term “legal assistant” was adopted by the Standing Committee on Ethics and Responsibility of the ABA in 1971 to make the paralegal a true profession. Even so, it took until 1986 for the ABA to give a clear definition of the paralegal profession.
