Wolves hold off Martinsburg for No. 1

HUNTINGTON — Familiar football foes Spring Valley and Martinsburg are Nos. 1 and 2 respectively in Class AAA in the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission ratings.

The opponents in the last two state championship games are separated by a mere 0.29 in the ratings released Tuesday. Spring Valley (7-0) takes 14.29 points into Friday’s 7:30 p.m. home game with No. 24 St. Albans (1-5, 1.67). The two-time defending champion Bulldogs (7-0) enter Friday’s 7 p.m. home game with No. 9 Hedgesville (5-2, 9.14) with 14 points.

The top 16 teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the playoffs, with the top eight receiving first-round home games.

Huntington High (6-0, 13.67) is tied with Musselman (6-0, 13.67) for third. The Highlanders travel to No. 5 Capital (5-1, 12.0) in a key 7:30 p.m. clash on Friday. Wheeling Park (5-1, 10.83) is sixth, followed in the top eight by Ripley (5-1, 10.33) and Parkersburg South (4-2, 9.17).

Hedgesville heads the next eight, with John Marshall (4-2, 8.5) 10th, Parkersburg (4-3, 8.14) 11th and Greenbrier East (4-2, 7.67) 12th. Cabell Midland (3-4, 5.71), which entertains No. 19 Woodrow Wilson (2-4, 4.5) at 7 p.m. Friday, is tied for 13th with Hurricane (3-4, 5.71) and University (3-4, 5.71). Hurricane is home to Parkersburg at 7:30 p.m. Friday. George Washington (3-4, 5.57) is 16th.

Class AA also features at Nos. 1 and 2 the participants in the 2017 state title game. Fairmont Senior (7-0, 13.29) is first. Defending champion Bluefield (6-0, 12.17) is second. Nicholas County (7-0, 11.29) is third, followed by Poca (7-0, 11.14) at No. 4. The Dots are open this week. Bridgeport (6-1, 10.43) is No. 5. Point Pleasant (5-0, 9.8) is sixth heading into Friday’s 7 p.m. contest at Meigs (2-5). Keyser (5-1, 9.67) and Robert C. Byrd (5-2, 8.86) round out the top eight.

Shady Spring (5-1, 8.67) is ninth, Petersburg (4-1, 8.6) and Grafton (4-1, 8.6) are tied for 10th and Mingo Central

(4-2, 8.0) is tied with Oak Hill (5-1, 8.0) for 12th. The Miners are home vs. No. 36 Scott (1-5, 1.33) at 7 p.m. Friday. Frankfort (6-1, 786) is 14th, followed by Weir (5-2,7.71) and Sissonville (4-2,7.33).

Chapmanville (4-2,6.67) and Wayne (4-2, 6.67) are tied for 18th, but not for long, as the Tigers visit the Pioneers at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Man (3-3, 4.83) is 25th. Winfield (2-4, 3.67) is 28th.

In Class A, Tolsia (4-3,4.57) is 16th, just .07 ahead of Summers County (3-3,4.5). Defending state champ Wheeling Central (6-0,10.0) is tied with Mount View (6-0,10.0) at the top. Midland Trail (7-0, 8.43) is third, Doddridge County (6-0, 8.0) fourth and Cameron (7-0, 7.86) fifth. Parkersburg Catholic (7-0,7.71) and Tucker County (6-1, 7.71) are tied at No. 6. Williamstown (6-1,7.57) is eighth.

No. 9 Pendleton County (5-2, 7.14) is followed by Sherman (5-1, 6.67) at No. 10. Van (5-1, 6.0) and Fayetteville (5-2, 6.0) are tied for 11th. Ritchie County (4-2, 5.33) is 13th, followed by Clay-Battelle (4-2, 4.83), Magnolia (4-3,4.71) and Tolsia.

Tug Valley (3-3,3.67) is 22nd. Wahama (1-6, 0.86) is tied for 36th. Buffalo (0-6, 0.0) and Hannan (0-5, 0.0) are tied for 39th.

OHIO RATINGS: If the playoffs began today not only would Ironton return to the postseason, but the Fighting Tigers would receive a first-round home game. The Fighting Tigers (5-2, 9.3071) are fourth in Division V, Region 19. Ironton plays host to Coal Grove (4-3, 5.05), the No. 14 team in Division VI, Region 23, at 7 p.m. Friday. Oak Hill (5-2, 6.4286) is eighth. The Oaks visit Sciotoville East (2-5) at 7 p.m. Friday. Chesapeake (3-4, 6.3143) is ninth. The Panthers travel to South Point (0-7) at 7 p.m. Friday. River Valley (0-7, 0.0) is 23rd.

In Division IV, Region 15, Gallia Academy (6-1,11.4286) is third and Fairland (4-3,8.3429) fifth. The Blue Devils are home vs. Rock Hill (1-6) at 7 p.m. Friday. The Dragons visit Portsmouth (4-3 and 13th in Division V, Region 20) at 7 p.m. Friday. Meigs (2-5, 1.7571) is 18th in Region 15.

Green (5-1, 5.7339) is No. 5 in Divison VII, Region 27. Symmes Valley (3-4, 2.2653) is 14th. South Gallia (1-6,5714) is 23rd.

Defending state champion Wheelersburg (6-1,16.5643) is No. 1 in Division V, Region 20. Portsmouth West (6-1,12.0143) is second and Minford (6-1, 9.3857) is fifth. Wheelersburg entertains Minford at 7 p.m. Friday.
