President of Delaware school board steps down amid pressure

July 6, 2018

GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) — The president of a Delaware school board has stepped down amid calls for his resignation related to ethical and financial lapses detailed in a 2017 audit.

The News Journal of Wilmington reported Friday that Sussex Tech School Board President Patrick Cooper has resigned. In June, teachers and staff called for Cooper and four other board members to step down.

State Auditor Tom Wagner found last year that a developer sold property to the Sussex Technical School District for nearly twice what he paid for it weeks earlier. The developer’s construction business then was awarded nearly $4 million in district contracts without state approval.

The district’s top administrators were put on leave after the audit and were eventually allowed to retire. The newspaper says Cooper didn’t respond to requests for comment.
