OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi fire chief says he has resigned because of his health, the work environment and his family.

Oxford Fire Department Chief Mark Heath tells The Oxford Eagle the three factors were why he chose to resign. He started working for the department in 2016 and his resignation will be effective Wednesday.

Heath experienced a health-related issue this month that got his attention. He says he works with a cardiologist and pulmonologist but that he's OK. He says being on-call 24 hours every day was unnecessary stress keeping him from family.

Mayor Robyn Tannehill says Heath has served Oxford well and expanded emergency response service. He helped implement a program certifying more firefighters to provide first-response medical care.

Heath says he'll transition into a Monday through Friday job in Tennessee.
