Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer turns a double play over the Mets’ Jose Bautista during the first inning Friday, July 27, 2018, at PNC Park.

Jordy Mercer is back, and Sean Rod is gone for now.

The Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday activated shortstop Mercer from the 10-day disabled list, designating utilityman Sean Rodriguez for assignment to open a spot on the 25-man roster.

Mercer was placed on the 10-day disabled list Aug. 16 with a left calf strain. The seven-year veteran, batting .262 with six home runs and 37 RBIs, was in Wednesday night’s lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals, batting eighth and playing short.

Rodriguez, 33, was hitting .167 with five home runs and 19 RBIs in 66 games and was activated from the 10-day disabled list Friday.

The 11-year veteran played for the Pirates in 2015 and 2016 before signing with the Atlanta Braves before 2017. He, his wife and two young sons were injured in a serious car accident in Miami, Fla., in January 2017, and the Pirates reaquired him through an August 2017 trade.

After designating Rodriguez for assignment, the Pirates have seven days to trade him or place him on waivers, where he can be claimed by another team. If he clears waivers, the Pirates can option him to the minors or release him.
