Falcons Rally Past MCLA
FITCHBURG -- Fourth-seeded Fitchburg State rallied past fifth-seeded MCLA, 2-1 in opening-round action of the MASCAC softball tournament Wednesday afternoon at Donna Lee Withington Memorial Softball Field.
MCLA (14-21, 7-7 MASCAC) opened the scoring in the top of the third as senior Kaitlyn Berghela singled up the middle and scored off an RBI double from junior Kaylyn Holliday for the 1-0 edge.
Down a run in the sixth, Fitchburg State (25-14, 8-6) plated two runs when senior Melissa DiPhilippo brought in freshman Courtney Luker with a sacrifice fly to right before junior McKenzie Lambert laced a double to left to score senior Maddie Medina for the 2-1 lead.
Falcons’ sophomore hurler Taylor Colvin, of Lancaster, secured the victory for the Green and Gold, pitching a perfect seventh frame. Overall, Colvin tossed 2.1 innings of relief with one strikeout.
Mikayla Harnois went 4.2 innings in the circle for FSU, scattering three hits and striking out three while allowing just one run.
Lambert led the way for the Falcons, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Falcons will travel to top-seeded Bridgewater State this afternoon for a quarterfinal contest starting at 4.
