Brewer Defends Middleweight Title
LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) _ Charles Brewer stopped fellow American, Antoine Byrd in the third round Saturday with a flurry of punches to successfully defend his IBF super middleweight title.
The hard-punching Brewer, who knocked out South Africa’s Gary Ballard a year ago to gain the belt, battered Byrd with a series of hooks midway through the round.
The referee stopped the fight with 1:11 remaining as Brewer defended his crown for the third time. His record improved to 32-5 with 22 knockouts.
Brewer’s next title defense will be against Germany’s Sven Ottke, who outpointed Dutchman William Krijnen over 10 rounds on the same card.
Byrd, 31-8 with 17 knockouts, lost a decision to American Lindell Holmes in 1991, and three years ago to Roy Jones Jr.
