Family of Five Found Dead

May 12, 1989

WATERLOO, Ind. (AP) _ A family of five was found shot to death in their home Thursday after authorities became suspicious because the three children had not shown up for school for several days, police said.

The victims were identified as David M. Fager, 34, his wife, Roxane, 31, and their children, Bryce Allan, 16, Michael Edward, 11, and 9-year-old Melissa Lynn, said state police Cpl. Gary Robbins at Fort Wayne.

A large-caliber handgun found at the scene was believed to have been used in the shootings, Robbins said.

DeKalb County Prosecutor Monte Brown said the family members were found in their beds about 4 p.m. and the handgun was found near the father’s body.

The victims apparently had been dead for some time, possibly since a week ago Wednesday, the last day the children attended school.

School officials alerted authorities because the children had not been in school, Brown said.

″They contacted the Waterloo police, the Waterloo police contacted us. We obtained a court order to go into the house and that’s when we discovered the bodies,″ he said.

Waterloo is about 25 miles north of Fort Wayne.
