REPEATING to change slugline
LAS VEGAS (AP) _ Rudy Zavala will replace 1988 Olympic gold medalist Kennedy McKinney in a bout against former champion Pedro Decima of Argentina on the undercard of the Evander Holyfield-Larry Holmes heavyweight title fight Friday night.
McKinney was pulled from the card on Monday after skipping three training sessions.
Matchmaker Bruce Trampler said McKinney missed one workout last week, then skipped workouts Saturday and Monday. McKinney, the bantamweight gold medalist at Seoul, underwent a year-long rehabilitation program for drug abuse last year.
Trampler said McKinney failed to notify his trainer after any of the recent absences.
″When we finally found him, he told us he missed the first workout because he spent the night in jail on traffic warrants,″ Trampler said. ″That checked out, but he didn’t have an explanation for the other two.″
Zavala is an unbeaten super-bantamweight from Costa Mesa, Calif., at 16-0-1. He has stopped 13 of 15 opponents, grabbing a draw against Johnny Vasquez in Phoenix in February but beating him in April.
Decima, 29-3, knocked out Paul Banke in 1990 for the World Boxing Council championship. He lost the title in his first defense to Japan’s Kiyoshi Hatanaka.
