Former Ohio sheriff’s sergeant found guilty of sexual battery

TOLEDO, Ohio — A former sergeant with the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office accused of raping an unconscious woman was found guilty by a judge Tuesday after pleading no contest to a lesser charge, reports say.

Joseph A. Gorney, 51, entered the plea to a third-degree count of sexual battery as part of a deal with prosecutors, The Blade reports. He had been facing a first-degree felony charge of rape.

Authorities accused Gorney of raping a 38-year-old woman in June, WTOL Channel 11 reports. Authorities tell The Blade that Gorney found the woman unconscious from drinking at a neighbor’s house at about 2 a.m. and raped her.

Gorney, who had worked at the department for 24 years, resigned on June 22.

Gorney will be sentenced on Jan. 3 and is being classified as a Tier 3 sex offender.
